In medieval times, many kingdoms existed in Africa. This is a list of the seven most important. The Axum Kingdom existed between 100 to 940 A.D. It was one of the most important kingdoms in those times and controlled many lands next to and across the Red Sea. Coins

380: Christianity becomes the state religion of the Roman Empire, the leaders are called patriarchs. 395: The Byzantine Empire is created by Emperor Constantine I. He changed the name of a Greek city named Byzantium and called it Constantinople, making it the capital of his new kingdom. 529: Justinian I

Pope Urban II started the crusades for more than just one reason. The first (and most obvious) reason was to reconquer Jerusalem, which was occupied by the Muslims. Another reason might have been that Pope Urban wanted to force the Byzantines to convert to Catholicism and thus unify the Churches.
