Joe:

Joe is the kind-hearted nephew of an old hermit who lived on the shore of a lake. His uncle died in a storm leaving his nephew with only ten dollars. Joe is very kind. When he heard that someone was in great need he brought them groceries and lent them some money once he started a business. His business was to ferry people around the lake.

Ned:

Joe's best friend and companion. He sometimes gives Joe money for taking him out on the lake in Joe's small rowboat. They sought shelter in an abandoned building and heard three crooks talking.
