Captain Nemo (From 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
Nemo, a captain, a navigator, an engineer, and an avenger, from the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, is a very interesting character. The captain, is revealed to be a man of Indian descent who was fighting against the nation that killed his family while providing resources to oppressed people to fight back against their oppressors.
Nemo is the captain of his ship, but he is also the engineer behind its creation. Instead of hiring some other people to create his submarine, he did it himself with the help of his crew. This indicates that he is a very talented scientist.
In the sixth chapter of the second part of the book, we are told that Nemo gave a chest full of gold to a diver, and that it was going to some address in modern Greece. This money was going to some organization there that were fighting against the Ottoman Empire, which was oppressing Greece.
While exploring the Ceylon’s pearl fishery, a pearl diver is attacked by a shark. Captain Nemo rushes in and risks his life to save the poor man. After reviving him, Nemo gives the diver a bag full of pearls. This indicates that the captain was sympathetic towards the poor people of the world who were being used by rich people for profit. He was partial to this man also because he was one of his kinsmen, an Indian.
In the second to last chapter of the book, Nemo attacks a ship after being fired upon. This indicates that he was seemingly only defending himself with his submarine, but in fact he was getting revenge on the country that killed his family. After destroying the ship, he proves to us that he did not like doing this by going to his room and crying.
