Birds' Feathers
Birds are special from other animals because they have feathers. They have three types of feathers which are called contour feathers, downy feathers, and filoplumes.
Contour feathers cover most of the birds' bodies. These are the feathers that the birds use to fly. Vanes are the silky material of a contour feather, which is made of tiny barbs that hold everything together.
Downy feathers are feathers that keep birds warm. They are the reason why so many of the birds look fuzzy and puffy. These feathers are also very soft and are sometimes used in pillows.
Filoplumes are long, hair-like feathers that no one really knows what they are used for.
